UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park donates vital equipment to NHS staff

UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park staff and students have donated urgently needed personal protective equipment to the NHS.

The technical school has given 100 disposable aprons, 60 pairs of safety glasses, 20 pairs of goggles, seven boxes of gloves and one visor to Riverside Health Partnership, which has surgeries based in North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.

Jessica Stevenson, Principal, UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, said: “We have enormous respect for the work that NHS staff are doing in response to Covid-19 and are very proud to play our part in supporting them.”

She added: “We have strong connections with NHS employers as one of our technical specialisms is health sciences. In addition to providing personal protective equipment, some of our students are also working in residential care homes during the lockdown to help frontline staff in that sector.”

In a video message, posted on Twitter @riverside_hp, Dr Michael Ho, Senior Managing Partner of Riverside Health Partnership, thanked the UTC for its support. He said: “We are very busy in this pandemic. Your donations are so important to us and we want to thank you so much for your help.”

At the UTC, graded ‘good’ by Ofsted, students complete technical qualifications in computing, health sciences and sports science alongside GCSE and A Levels. They work on employer-led projects, developing skills related to their subject specialism as well as team working and problem solving.

The UTC is equipped with cutting edge industry standard facilities. Organisations supporting the UTC include Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, employers on Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

UTCs are government funded technical schools that provide academic and technical qualifications to match the skills needs of regional employers, supporting economic growth and employment.

Young people can join the UTC in Year 9 at the age of 13 or in Year 12 at the age of 16. Some places are still available for this September. Apply now at www.utcsheffield.org.uk
