A New Strategy for Sport

In a recent consultation paper entitled ‘A New Strategy for Sport’; the Government outlined the need for a new strategy which recognises the importance of sport and physical activity and a clear approach for making it an integral part of our everyday lives.

The paper invited views on the following themes:

  • Participation
  • Physical Activity
  • Children and Young People
  • Financial Sustainability
  • Coaching, Workforce and Good Governance
  • Elite and Professional Sport
  • Infrastructure
  • Fairness and Equality
  • Safety and Wellbeing
  • International Influence and Major Sporting Events

In response to the paper, Richard Caborn, Chairman of Legacy Park Ltd, held a workshop with representatives from sporting bodies and other organisations across the Sheffield City Region.

The debate focused on three over-arching key issues relevant to all ten themes. These were:

  • Governance, Collaboration and Structure of Sport
  • Growing and Sustaining Participation from Schools to Adulthood
  • The Funding and Financial Sustainability of Sport

Over 95% of invitees attended the workshop, highlighting what passion and enthusiasm there is for sport across Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

Following the workshop, we submitted a response detailing the recommendations, proposed actions and pilots we believe could help define the future strategy for sport and physical activity in our nation.
