Boxing legends back Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport

IBF welterweight champion, Kell Brook, and former WBO cruiserweight champion, Johnny Nelson, will be attending the red carpet event at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) on Wednesday 5 October.

Unbeaten Kell ‘Special K’ Brook, ranked as the world’s best welterweight, will be hoping to celebrate victory over middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin, who he faces in a blockbuster fight at the 02 Arena on September 10.

Sky TV pundit Johnny Nelson was the WBO cruiserweight champion for more than seven years, with thirteen successful title defences. He also held European and British
Cruiserweight titles.

The Sheffield born and bred boxers will be amongst the 1,000 guests expected at the Olympic Legacy Park event.

Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport is being staged in the centre of the Indoor Athletics Arena at EIS Sheffield – the same track where Olympians such as Jessica Ennis-Hill train.

Kell Brook said: “I’m proud to be supporting Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport and hopefully it can be a special homecoming for me after beating Golovkin. Sheffield is the UK’s home of sporting champions and it will be great to celebrate this at EIS Sheffield in October.”

Johnny Nelson said: “Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport is a great idea and long overdue for Sheffield. This city has produced so many sporting champions over the years who deserve to be honoured and I’m looking forward to celebrating all that’s great about Sheffield sport as well as recognising our city’s future stars.”

Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport will raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity and SportsAid Yorkshire and Humberside and will be hosted by BBC Look North’s Harry Gration and Tanya Arnold.

Six grassroots sports awards for individuals, groups or teams in the Sheffield City Region will be presented on the evening:
