Students in Year 12 will compete in the Vex Robotics Competition UK National Finals at the International Centre in Telford, West Midlands, in March 2018.
Dr Sarah Clark, Principal, UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, said: “I am so proud of our students and their technical excellence in design, engineering and computer science, and wish them all the best for the national competition. At the UTC, students learn from industry experts in high tech facilities, and their latest success shows how they develop both the skills and attitude that employers are looking for.”
The Year 12 students won their national final place after being the tournament champions at a regional final last term, achieving the highest score on record. They were one of three UTC Sheffield teams that took part alongside their robots called Suzanne, Sam and Sessel.
The regional competition required students to programme their robots to complete several practical tasks. These included a cone stacking challenge and a task that tested driver control skills. UTC Sheffield students from Year 10 and Year 13 also took part in the regional competition, which was held at De Montfort School in Evesham on November 25th.
UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus, for 13 to 19-year-olds, specialises in computing, health sciences and sport science. Students complete technical as well as academic qualifications at the £10 million facility, which opened in September 2016.
Students can join the UTC at the age of 13 in Year 9, or aged 14 in Year 10, or aged 16 in Year 12. They study technical and academic qualifications including GCSEs and A Levels. UTC Sheffield recruits students from South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire. The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce sponsor the UTC.
