Latest Sheffield Urban CX route revealed

The race, taking place at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park on Sunday 9 September 2018, will see riders traverse a course starting in the Don Valley Bowl and snaking up the terraced hillside before heading into new parkland.

Adam Simmonite, founder of the Sheffield Urban CX series, commented: “As this is the final round it’s going to be a test for the riders. It’s really exciting to announce a completely new route – starting in the Don Valley Bowl which is fairly flat and going on to become more hilly with a few surprises!”

The Sheffield Urban Cyclo Cross concept was developed as a way to showcase areas that have played a part in Sheffield’s history and are currently experiencing regeneration. Started by Adam in 2017, key areas in Sheffield’s vibrant cityscape are being reimagined as venues to host fast-paced, grass roots cycle racing.

The courses use the urban environment to create short, sharp circuits, creating challenging racing for riders and maximum excitement for spectators. The races are also an opportunity to highlight Sheffield’s growing reputation as ‘The Outdoor City’.

Adam continued: “The 2018 Sheffield Urban CX series will be the first time this area has welcomed a cycling event since the amazing atmosphere of the Tour de France Stage 2 finished just down the road on Attercliffe common in 2014.

“We like to think of our events as accessible for new riders and experienced racers alike. The races also promote an important message around maintaining an active lifestyle and this fits perfectly with what Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is all about.

“Spectating is free, just bring your loudest cheers and noise makers and enjoy the action as it unfolds over the course of the race!”

Project Lead for Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the Rt Hon Richard Caborn, said: “We’re really excited to welcome this alternative cycling event to the Park. It’s great use of the space and exactly what we want people to be doing here – having fun and keeping active. We can’t wait to see how the race goes.”

The race at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is new to the series in 2018 and follows two other circuits – Round 1 at Kelham Island, which saw over 100 riders compete and Round 2 at Park Hill Flats, which saw the first Brompton bikes Urban Dash, sponsored by JE James Cycles
