The B.Braun Sheffield Sharks has announced the launch of the Sheffield Sharks Education Academy at the Canon Medical Arena at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.
The Academy, developed in partnership with education specialists InStadia Education, will collaborate with key educational and business partners across the city to provide a high-quality, inspirational educational experience that prepares students for success in business, higher education, and beyond.
This co-educational facility will serve over 400 local and international learners, including students who have underachieved in traditional settings, NEETs (young people not in Education, Employment, or Training), and adults seeking further education and upskilling opportunities.
Head of Operations for the B.Braun Sheffield Sharks, Marko Backovic, said: “We are excited to launch the Sheffield Sharks Education Academy, providing exceptional opportunities for young minds to excel off the court, in a truly inspiring environment. We cannot wait to welcome students to the Canon Medical Arena.”
This was echoed by Managing Director of the Canon Medical Arena, Yuri Matischen, who added: “This initiative represents a significant step forward in our commitment to fostering both athletic and academic excellence. We believe that the skills and values learned here will empower students to achieve their fullest potential in all areas of life.”
InStadia Education, who work with clubs and stadiums to develop education programmes in their facilities, will help the Academy offer a comprehensive curriculum emphasising core subjects such as English, Maths, and IT, along with opportunities for progression to Level 3 courses in various academic and vocational fields.
Spencer Taylor, Director of InStadia Education, expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with the Sharks on their new educational initiative: “We are incredibly excited to be working with the Sharks on their new education venture. Working with their senior team, we have devised a broad and exciting set of educational opportunities for the club to deliver to its local and international communities. We will continue to develop the clubs offering, helping them engage and expand their brand to a wider audience whilst continuing to deliver on key social goals.”
Key features of the programme include:
- High achievement levels in core curriculum subjects.
- Partnerships with colleges, universities, and employers for curriculum support, mentoring, work experience, and enrichment activities.
- International partnerships to support education for the 18+ market.
- Emphasis on student health and wellbeing across the curriculum.
- Encouragement of participation in academic, sporting, and cultural activities.

The Academy will set ambitious standards in all aspects of education, supported by personalised pathways, mentoring, and preparation for work or higher education. The innovative approach, backed by reputable partners from sports, performing arts, and other sectors, aims to nurture well-rounded individuals ready to contribute to society and the economy.
Students will receive targeted support in literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century technology skills while pursuing vocational qualifications in their chosen fields. Enrichment activities, extended work experience, and involvement in real-life projects with major partners will further enhance their learning experience.
The curriculum, developed in collaboration with local schools and colleges, will focus on core skills and readiness for employment. It will incorporate decision-making, ethical choices, and personal responsibility, with a strong emphasis on Student Voice to engage young people in their learning.
Each student will benefit from:
- A personalised curriculum and individual attention.
- Positive relationships with staff and family, based on detailed knowledge of their progress.
- An enabling environment that stimulates learning.
- Continuous, detailed progress assessments.
- Innovative learning and personal development approaches.
The goal is to prepare students for life and work, ensuring they leave with confidence, sensitivity, and purpose. The Academy will partner with high-quality organisations to provide clear pathways to higher education, apprenticeships, or employment, aligning the facility’s vision with long-term educational and career goals.
