Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has welcomed the Government’s announcement of £7 million funding for a full feasibility study into the potential for a future Olympic and Paralympic Games in the North of England.
The announcement represents an exciting step forward in exploring how a Northern Games could inspire a new generation, bring communities together and deliver lasting social and economic benefits across the region.
As the only Olympic Legacy Park established outside an Olympic host city, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is an excellent example of how the inspiration of London 2012 can be translated into tangible, long term benefits for local people, businesses and communities.
Established to deliver the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Park has spent the past decade bringing together world-class sporting facilities, education, research, healthcare and commercial innovation. Its work is built around four interconnected themes: Sport, Community, Economy and Environment, ensuring the benefits of the Olympic legacy extend far beyond elite performance.
Since the Park’s development began, the site has grown to encompass an impressive range of facilities, including the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, Ice Sheffield, Canon Medical Arena, Steel City Stadium, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, the Advanced Food Innovation Centre, LivingCare Medical Diagnostic Centre and The Spark, home to the National Centre for Child Health Technology. These sit alongside Oasis Academy Don Valley, UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, outdoor sporting facilities, accessible green spaces and routes for walking, running and cycling.
Together, these facilities create an environment where elite athletes can train, local communities can participate in sport, young people can access education and develop new skills, and research, healthcare and businesses can collaborate to improve lives and support economic growth.
The Park’s impact is rooted in creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. From supporting the next generation of athletes and developing future skills to creating employment, attracting investment and encouraging healthier, more active lifestyles, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park demonstrates how sporting infrastructure can become a catalyst for wider regeneration and community benefit.
A future Northern Games would offer an opportunity to build on the legacy of London 2012 on an even greater scale, showcasing the North’s sporting excellence, innovation and ambition while creating opportunities that continue long after the closing ceremony.
Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park looks forward to supporting the next stages of this work and playing its part in helping the North realise its potential to host a future Olympic and Paralympic Games.
With its established sporting infrastructure, strong partnerships across education, health and research, and commitment to delivering lasting community benefits, the Park is well placed to contribute to the conversation about how a Northern Games could inspire future generations and leave a meaningful legacy for the region.
The feasibility study is an important opportunity to explore what could be achieved through a shared ambition for the North – one that puts people, places and long term benefits at the heart of its vision.
