Young people, parents and employers have taken part in the consultation for UTC 2 Sheffield for Human Sciences and Computing, which closes at the end of today, Friday March 27th, after being extended by one week.
Sheffield’s second UTC is due to open at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park in September 2016. The £10 million facility will train 14 to 19-year-olds in the skills needed by the computing, healthcare technology, sports science, exercise medicine and wellbeing sectors.
UTC 2 Sheffield for Human Sciences and Computing is being led by The Sheffield College. Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry are co-sponsors.
Andrew Cropley, Executive Director for Strategic Planning and Business Development, The Sheffield College, said: “We are delighted with the response to the consultation. I would like to thank everyone who has taken part. We are looking forward to moving on with the next phase of UTC 2, which will provide young people with high quality careers and support regional business growth.”
Richard Wright, Executive Director, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s good to see the level of interest in UTC 2. We believe this is partly down to the success of UTC1, which has really proven that you can have an employer-student partnership that is a win-win for both. We very much believe that UTC 2, and the other facilities at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, are an investment in the future that can really give our economy a distinctive flavour.”
Students at UTC 2 will study a combination of high quality technical qualifications in computer sciences, healthcare and sport alongside academic subjects including English and maths. They will work alongside some of the country’s leading athletes, and health and sports science experts, as part of the wider Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park project.
Advances in healthcare technologies and the use of ‘big data’ in research are providing opportunities for the most advanced work in computing. The consultation feedback will be presented to the Department for Education, and inform the next stage of development for UTC 2.
The catchment area for UTC 2 is Sheffield City Region which comprises South Yorkshire, and parts of North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. The total number of student places is 600 as part of a three-year phased recruitment process from 2016 until 2019. Follow UTC 2 on Twitter @UTC2Sheffield.
