UTC Sheffield Student Recruitment Events

The open evenings on January 13th and 27th will profile opportunities for 14 to 19-year-olds in four technical specialisms: advanced engineering and manufacturing, creative and digital, human sciences and computing.

Guests will find out how to apply for a place at UTC Sheffield starting this September, meet staff and get information on courses, careers and university. To find out more, visit http://www.utcsheffield.org.uk/events/ or call 0114 2603970.

Nick Crew, Executive Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “Our students enjoy hands-on technical learning and industry projects supported by employers, shown by their fantastic recent national success at WorldSkills.”

He added: “Students also benefit from great careers prospects in sectors where there are regional skills gaps. I look forward to meeting visitors at our events this month and explaining how we provide a different educational experience for young people.”

Both events will give an overview of all four UTC Sheffield subject specialisms and take place from 5.00pm to 7.00pm at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street.

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are state funded specialist technical schools for 14 to 19-year-olds. Students complete a technical qualification as well as GCSEs and A Levels, and can join the UTC at the age of 14 in Year 10 or 16 in Year 12.

Employers are heavily involved in the curriculum providing mentoring, course projects and work experience, training the next generation of Britain’s creatives, scientists, engineers and technicians.

The Sheffield College is the lead sponsor of both of the city’s UTCs. Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry are co sponsors.  The catchment area for both UTCs is Sheffield City Region, which includes South Yorkshire and parts of North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

UTC Sheffield City Centre campus opened in September 2013 on Matilda Street and specialises in advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative and digital. The first UTC in Yorkshire, it is supported by more than 40 employers. Last year, 100% of leavers progressed on to employment or further study.

UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus is opening in September 2016. Construction is well underway on the £10 million new facility, based on the Olympic Legacy Park (OLP). The OLP comprises a multi-million pound investment in cutting edge facilities for healthcare technologies, sports and sports science.

Employers supporting UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus include the Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks, Sheffield International Venues, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University of Sheffield, Goldfish Systems, Yoomee, Mundojumbo, The Better With Data Society, Home Office, Team Active, Birchenhall Howden, Scrapbook Development and Sero Consulting.
