From synchronised skating to cheerleading – Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is open for some spectacular sporting events this weekend.

Following its inaugural event at iceSheffield in 2019, the Steel City Trophy synchronized skating competition is set to break entry records with over 70 teams of up to 20 skaters from across the world competing at the ice arena from Friday to Sunday.

Just over the road at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS), hundreds of cheerleaders will be taking part in the Future Cheer Circus Spectacular event on Saturday and Sunday.

Organised by amateur sports club, the Sheffield Synchronized Skating Academy (SSSA), the Steel City Trophy burst onto the synchronised skating calendar last year, and thanks to its success was selected as one of the International Skating Union’s calendar of events in 2020.

iceSheffield will welcome almost 1,500 competitors to the city from 11 different countries and SSSA Head Coach Amanda Hembrow-Jones said: “When we launched the Steel City Trophy last year, we really didn’t know what the reaction would be, both in the UK and from around the world.

“It was amazing and the inclusion of the Steel City Trophy on the ISU calendar means a bigger presence on the world stage.

“Synchronised skating is a wonderful sport to watch, as skaters move around the ice performing difficult moves in harmony. We hope the people of Sheffield will come and support the competition, as well as supporters of the skating teams attending from around the world.”

Both EISS and iceSheffield form part of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and Former Sports Minister and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Project Lead, Richard Caborn, said: “Sheffield is recognised on the national and international stage as a premier venue for a wide range of sports and this weekend is a perfect example.

“We are delighted to be welcoming synchronised ice skating and cheerleading competitors of all ages and their supporters to Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. They will be celebrating the joy of movement and sport this weekend – as will Olympian elite athletes preparing for Tokyo 2020 and junior parkrunners.”

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park was established in the wake of the 2012 London Games to deliver an Olympic legacy through the four themes of sport, community, economy and environment. The multi-million-pound park provides world-class sports, education, health and leisure facilities, new skills and jobs.
