A total of 50 students sat exams this year, and the technical qualification pass rate was 100% for all three specialisms: Computing, Health Sciences and Sport Science.

In addition, 68% of students achieved a distinction* to distinction-merit grade (A* to B equivalent) in Computing.

The figure was 57% in Health Sciences and 70% in Sport Science.

More than 70% of students have secured university places.

Dr Sarah Clark, Principal of UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, said: “It’s fantastic to see our first students celebrate this major milestone. I’d like to congratulate them on their success, wish them well for the future and thank our staff and employers for their incredible commitment and support.”

She added: “Our students get ahead because they complete technical qualifications alongside academic ones and benefit from amazing high tech facilities and working with industry experts. They develop the technical, professional and personal skills that employers need, and we are delighted our first cohort are progressing onto high quality apprenticeships, employment or university places.”

Students at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park choose a technical specialism: Computing, Health Sciences or Sport Science. The technical qualifications are equivalent to one and a half or two A Levels, and involve working on employer-led projects and developing skills related to the subject specialism as well as team working and problem solving skills.

UTCs are government funded technical schools established to provide technical learning opportunities in partnership with employers and universities, and to match the skills needs of regional employers, supporting economic growth and employment.

Employers supporting the UTC include Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, employers on Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield.

Students can join the UTC at the age of 13 in Year 9 or at the age of 16 in Year 12 and the UTC recruits from across Sheffield City Region. The £10 million facility has a phased recruitment process and capacity for 600 students who learn in cutting edge industry standard facilities.

Some places are still available in Year 12 at UTC Sheffield starting this September.
